This quiz is a self-reflection tool for planning your day. It is not a medical or sleep assessment. If you have ongoing sleep problems, talk to a doctor.

What is a chronotype?

Your chronotype is your body’s natural preference for when to sleep, wake up and feel most alert. It comes from your internal body clock, your circadian rhythm, and it is shaped by genetics, age and daily habits. Some people are wide awake at 6 AM, while others only hit their stride in the late afternoon. Neither is lazy or better. They are simply wired differently.

Sleep researchers usually describe chronotype as a scale that runs from strong morning types to strong evening types, with most people somewhere in the middle. Productivity writing turned that scale into four easy-to-remember types: the Lion, the Bear, the Wolf and the Dolphin. This quiz uses those four types because they make it simple to plan a real day around your energy.

The four chronotypes at a glance

Type Natural wake time Focus peak Watch out for
Lion Early, around 6 AM Early morning An energy crash in the evening
Bear With the sun, around 7 AM Mid-morning The mid-afternoon slump
Wolf Later, 8 to 9 AM Late afternoon and evening Groggy, forced mornings
Dolphin Varies, light sleep Late morning, in short bursts A busy mind at bedtime

How to use your result

  1. Put your hardest task in your peak window. One protected block of deep work at the right time beats a whole day of half-focused effort.
  2. Batch admin into your low-energy hours. Email, invoices and quick replies need less brainpower, so they fit the dips.
  3. Schedule meetings around your peak, not inside it. The hour just before or after your best focus is ideal for collaboration.
  4. Protect your wind-down. A consistent evening routine keeps tomorrow’s peak in the same place.
  5. Plan the whole week. Send your recipe to the free Weekly Time-Block Planner and adjust it to your real calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this chronotype quiz?

It is a self-reflection quiz built on the kind of questions sleep researchers ask about sleep timing and daily energy. It gives you a practical starting point for planning your day, not a clinical diagnosis. The best test is to follow your recipe for two weeks and adjust it to how you actually feel.

Can my chronotype change over time?

Yes, to a degree. Chronotype shifts with age: teenagers and young adults tend to run later, and most people become earlier as they get older. Light exposure, work hours and habits also nudge it. Retake the quiz every few months or after a big change in routine.

What are the Lion, Bear, Wolf and Dolphin chronotypes?

They are a popular shorthand for the morning-to-evening scale. Lions are early risers, Bears follow the sun, Wolves are night owls and Dolphins are light sleepers with irregular energy. Most people are a mix, which is why your result also shows your full chronotype mix.

What is the most common chronotype?

Most people sit in the middle of the scale, the pattern described here as the Bear. Strong morning types and strong evening types are less common.

I am a Wolf, but my job starts at 8 AM. What can I do?

Start the day with low-demand tasks, get bright daylight soon after waking and move your hardest work later in the day wherever you can. Keep evening light dim so your body clock does not drift even later. Moving just one deep-work block into your peak already makes a noticeable difference.

Does the quiz store my answers?

No. Your answers are scored in your browser. Only your result is remembered on your own device, so the Weekly Planner can use it. Nothing is sent to our servers.
